How to Find Jade Rings, Bracelets, and Jewelry

By

Jade is a precious ornamental gem stone prized in much of China, East Asia, and historical Meso-America. In ancient China the stone was valued for ceremonial and decorative purposes as people attributed mythical qualities to the stone. Some claimed the rock to be moonlight in crystal form and was considered to be the highest tribute to the Chinese emperor from those journeying across the Silk Road. There are two types-jadeite and nephrite. Jadeite is rarer and more expensive. Even today jade is considered as a stone that offers protection, thus its many reproductions in forms of gods and goddesses; and since its hardness was ideal for crafting weapons, it was widely used and prized in China. Jade comes many shades from vivid emerald green to a virtually white stone, to a light yellow stone. However, since there are no experts in the specialization of jade like diamonds, you must go to a jade specialist if you want to know if your jade jewelry is 100% authentic.

Associations with Jade Rings, Jade Bracelets, and Jewelry

Jade is far more prized in China than anywhere else, as it symbolizes wealth, durability, status, and the embodiment of moonlight itself. Jade basically is the embodiment of every virtue that Chinese people (in ancient times) prized. You will do great with impressing a traditional Chinese family with jade rings, jade bracelets, or any jade jewelry. Jade also symbolizes the virtuous man or a beautiful woman, so if you are trying to impress someone with a strong Chinese heritage through jewelry, jade is the way to go. It is often a practice of women in the family to pass down jade bracelets generation to generation.

How to Tell if Jade is Real

Although the only sure fire way to tell if jade is real is by going to a jade specialist, there are some ways that you can have a better idea if your jade is real:

Irregularities
Hold your jade up to a bright light. Can you see irregular, felt like, fibrous intertwinings? If your jade has uniform fibers that look homogenous then it is probably fake. Irregularities are a likely sign that your jade is real.

Sound
This is quite a common sense test, but still worthwhile to point out. If you clink your jade beads together, do they sound like plastic beads? If they sound like plastic beads then they are probably not jade.

Warmth
If you hold jade close to your hands, it should take a while to warm up and feel cold and smooth to the touch.

Scratch Test
Jade will scratch other materials such as glass or even metal. But be careful not to damage your jade. Avoid this test but know that real jade will not scratch easily.
